2013 European Riverboat Cruise Mini-Reunion (More Information)
Based on the results of the recent survey of potential "destination" reunions, the Class of 1966 is planning its first out-of-country mini-reunion in 2013 on a European river cruise.
The cruise combines two night hotel stays in each of Prague and Paris (the Prague Hilton and Meridien Etoile respectively) with a seven night cruise on the two-year-old Viking Prestige on the Main-Danube Canal, Main, Rhine, and Moselle Rivers. Besides Prague and Paris, the itinerary includes visits to Nuremberg, Bamberg, Wurzburg, Rothenburg and Germany’s Romantic Road (optional), Heidelberg, the wine-growing region around Cochem and Koblenz, Trier, and Luxembourg. The price includes breakfasts at the hotels, all meals while on-board ship, ten city tours, on-board lectures and folkloric performances. The cruise line, Viking River Cruises, also includes complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner and free internet service. Extras include tips, non-meal alcoholic beverages, and some optional tours and wine-tastings.
The trip, which Viking calls "Cities of Light", starts in Prague on August 23 and ends in Paris on September 3. A full description, video, deck plans, and other information can be found at:
Depending on cabin size and deck location (upper, middle, or lower), our group price per person for double-occupancy ranges from $3631 (standard on lower deck) to $4431 (French balcony on upper deck) per person. Single rooms are available at $4756. In addition, depending on the number of classmates that sign up, further discounts of up to $300 per person will be available. If you choose to pay by bank transfer (bank name, account number, and routing number required), a further 3% discount applies. We have reserved twenty cabins split among the four price categories, which locks in our price until December 19, 2012. However, all cabins are on a first-come, first-served basis, i.e. the cruise line has the right to sell our block if all other rooms on the boat are sold out. While the cruise is more than a year away, please understand that river cruising has become extraordinarily popular, and that all spring and early fall cruises on this itinerary for 2013 are already virtually sold out. At the time we contracted for our block, about 50 cabins were still available on this particular date.
Airfare can be arranged separately or purchased (with free transfers) through Viking. They are currently offering a $500 discount per person off their normal rates if the entire cruise and air are both purchased and paid for prior to July 31. Any classmates who are past cruisers with Viking are also eligible for previous customer discounts, currently up to $300 per person, depending on the time lapse since your last cruise. In all cases, a $500 deposit per person is required with your reservation. Viking is an aggressive marketer (you may have seen their TV ads on PBS Masterpiece series), so incentives are common until the boat is close to being sold out. You should consider either adding time at the beginning or end of the itinerary to complete other "bucket lists" in Europe.
Our travel agent, who will handle all bookings and coordination with Viking, is Margaret Conlon, located in Wayne, PA. In order to get the Class of 1966 block rates, and all available discounts, bookings must go through her. She can be reached at 610-640-4124 or email@example.com and is available to answer all booking-related questions. We will periodically update the list of attendees on the class’ website.
Many of your wives and partners expressed interest in this type of an event after the Alumni Travel presentation at the 45th reunion last October. This is a rare opportunity to take a unique trip to France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Czech Republic in the company of a highly selective group (us!!). Feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org should you have any general questions.
