The Class of 1966 Lodge is a gift from the Class of 1966 to the students of Dartmouth.
The Lodge supports all Dartmouth students directly, not only members of DOC, but any student group, fraternity or sorority, club or organization, seeking an
off-campus meeting place. Located in Etna just twenty minutes from the campus and within a fifteen minute walk from parking near an Appalachian Trailhead,
the Class of 1966 Lodge will also be available to any alumni group interested in an off-campus meeting site.
The ’66 Lodge was proposed, designed, and built by Dartmouth students between 2006 and 2008 to replace
the former Fred Harris Cabin on Moose Mountain. Two earlier cabins had occupied the same site.
A few alumni, including ’66s, helped build the Lodge, too. As the cabin was nearing completion,
the Class of 1966 stepped in to raise the money to underwrite the cost of the materials and equipment
that were used in construction and to endow a fund to maintain the building and site.
The Lodge is used and maintained by members of the Dartmouth Outing Club. It is also used annually
for Freshman Trips and frequently by fraternities, sororities, academic departments, athletic teams,
alumni groups, college staff, and others seeking a quiet retreat in the beautiful New Hampshire hills.
The comfortable and functional facility includes a gas stove and oven, gas lights, the large stone
fireplace retained from Harris Cabin, a wood heating stove, gravity-fed running water, and a two-hole privy.
Up to 49 people may occupy the Lodge.
The logs were all selected --and their harvest supervised-- in the Second College Grant by College Forester Kevin Evans ’66a.
The unmarked Lodge trailhead is located on Three Mile Road in Etna, NH, just 20 minutes east of Hanover.
The trail parallels the Appalachian Trail. It is about a 15-minute hike through the woods and across
a stream in to the Lodge. The Nate Thompson Trail leads from behind the Lodge to meet the AT on the summit of Moose Mountain.
A two-page description of this project has been prepared by Dartmouth Outdoor Programs (view it here).
In addition to the static map at the bottom of this page, and the link to Directions to the Lodge, above, here is a link to an interactive Google map showing
the route from Hanover to the 1966 Lodge.
